Industry and retail superannuation funds criticise the rapid growth of the SMSF sector mainly on the grounds that much larger funds can better manage and invest the savings of ordinary Australians. The reality is that with a few rare exceptions, public offer funds are not catering for the needs of many of their members, especially those with larger balances or in the pension phase. The basic problem is that public offer funds focus solely on the single account the member holds with their fund. This is despite the fact that many superannuation fund members require both accumulation and pension accounts over their life and very often want to organise and structure their finances as a family or with a partner.
